Investment in the Future of ECG-Measurement

September 14, 2011

By the employment of a new electrode technology, the Capical GmbH takes new paths in the diagnosis of heart diseases. The Closing of the seed-financing-round with High-Tech Gründerfonds and a private investor now enables the advancement and the following market launch of the capacitive ECG-device (cEKG).

“The cEKG operates entirely wireless. All electrodes are embedded in a compact device. Since an electrical conduction is not necessary, no contact spray or gel is needed,” explains Dr. Martin Oehler, managing director, founder and joint inventor of the capacitive ECG-device. “The ECG-measurement can be accelerated and simplified with at least the same high signal quality achieved with conventional devices.”

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most significant tool for the cardiologist, both in case of emergency and routine diagnosis, and has established itself as the gold standard in the diagnostic of cardiovascular diseases over many years. By the employment of capacitive electrodes, Capical has developed an ECG-device that seizes current clinical needs. “Especially, through rapid diagnosis of acute myocardial infarctions, this promising technology can make it’s share,” exemplifies Prof. Lars Maier, cardiologist and Head Senior Physician of the university hospital Göttingen, who has supported the project scientifically since 2009.

The High-Tech Gründerfonds and Mr. Klaus Würtenberger, a highly  experienced private investor in the field of medical technology, are convinced: “The team will now adduce evidence that the cEKG can advance an established but stagnating diagnosis technology and that it will be launched successfully within the next year. The present development successes and first market reactions are encouraging,” describes Dr. Mehran Rafigh the expectations of the HTGF.

“It was important for us to find investors with professional medtec experiences. Beside our clinical and scientific network, we now have two additional strong partners who support the implementation of our business idea,” declares co-founder Henning Böge himself satisfied. The closing of the seed-financing-round enables Capical now to verify the good results of first pilot studies in a clinical trial and demonstrate the additional diagnostic potential of the cEKG. The market launch will start after finishing the process of certification next year.

Capical GmbH
Capical set itself the target to establish the capacitive ECG-measurement in clinical routine. Therefore, the results of many years of research were converted into the latest prototype. First, the inpatient health care market will be addressed with the cEKG. Further products for other fields of medical care are currently in planning.

As a spin-off from the Institute of Electrical Measurement Science and Fundamental Electrical Engineering of the TU Braunschweig, Capical was founded in September 2010 by Dr. Martin Oehler, Henning Böge and Prof. Meinhard Schilling. Beside the support program EXIST Gründerstipendium, the founders team was awarded for their business idea as well as for their product, the capacitive ECG-device, at the Businessplanwettbewerb Medizinwirtschaft 2010 and the Fresenius Erfinderpreis 2010. In cases of further development, Capical works together with the cardiological departments of the University Hospital Göttingen and the Clinical Center Oldenburg.
