Kumovis develops 3D printers specifically for medical technology. With its technology the team of Kumovis enables the manufacturing of individualized medical products, like patient-customized implants. The HTGF now participates in the seed financing round. This investment especially supports Kumovis‘ market launch of the innovative printers.

The founders of Kumovis have set themselves the goal of enabling the additive production of plastic implants and are developing innovative 3D printers for this purpose. The printers are specially tailored to medical technology requirements. The focus is on the processing of high-performance polymers such as PEEK or PPSU, which are already established in medical technology and approved for manufacturing of medical products.
In recent months, the Munich high-tech start-up has received great feedback and support from industry such as founder scene and has won the Munich Business Plan Competition by BayStartUP, for example.

Dr. Carsten Rudolph, Managing Director BayStartUP: “Kumovis offers a very good combination of digitalization and medical technology. Over all three phases in the Munich business plan competition in 2018 we observed a strong and growing team, developing their company systematically.”

With the completed seven-figure seed financing round with HTGF and a family office, the young company can now prepare for market entry.

  • Innovative actuators in an ultra-compact design made of shape memory alloys – Fresh capital from KIT and HTGF for memetis GmbH in Karlsruhe

As a spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), memetis GmbH completed its first funding round with a seven-figure amount. Within the financing consortium, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are investing side by side for the first time, together with other venture capital investors with extensive high-tech investment experience. The investment supports memetis’ business development, in particular the establishment of the comparatively unknown technology and various actuator applications in the market as well as expanding its own development and production capabilities.

More and more functionality in ever smaller installation spaces – this development can be observed across all industries today. In addition to microcomputers and a wide variety of sensors, components that actively generate motion are increasingly being used in a large number of applications: miniature actuators! Where conventional technologies increasingly reach their limits, the Karlsruhe-based company memetis relies on ultra-compact actuators made of shape memory alloys.

The actuators developed by memetis use intelligent materials – the so-called shape memory alloys (SMA). These are metallic alloys that seem to “remember” a certain, previously trained shape through electrical heating and then assume it with a certain force – very similar to a muscle that is tensioned. The specialty about this is that this alloy itself already has these properties and in principle no other mechanical components are required. The forces correspond to a multiple of the component’s weight and the displacement can be up to 10% of its length. When the actuator cools down, it loses its force and can then be reactivated by reheating – up to many millions of times in modern SMAs. These special properties can be used specifically to produce high-performance actuators with unsurpassed working density in a highly compact format.

This is particularly useful in miniature valves and dosing units for insulin pumps or so-called lab-on-a-chip systems, which have to be highly portable and can be used directly on the patient. Ultra-compact actuators are also in demand in high-quality smartphones so that snapshots with the integrated camera are always sharply focused and blur-free. The possible applications are far from exhausted. In addition, the intelligent components can even provide information on their own switching status in the sense of “self-sensing”.

    About memetis
memetis develops foil-based miniature actuators made of shape memory alloys (SMA). Foil-based SMA miniature actuators enable high switching forces with better integratability and higher design flexibility compared to available wire-based SMA solutions. memetis has expertise in the microstructuring of SMA miniature actuators and can quickly adapt the developed actuators to market and customer requirements using specially coordinated rapid manufacturing technology. Due to the expanded range of applications, memetis SMA miniature actuators are used in a variety of innovative industries, such as biotechnology and medical technology.

  • IT security startup Code Intelligence raises 700,000 € in seed capital

The High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and the Digital Hub Bonn invest in the IT security startup Code Intelligence from Bonn, Germany. Code Intelligence is a spin-off from the University of Bonn’s Usable Security & Privacy group and uses intelligent algorithms to uncover vulnerabilities and bugs in software. The capital raised will be used to further develop the product and for market entry.

Code Intelligence enables companies to strengthen the security and reliability of their software. At the foundation of its technology stack the startup utilizes fuzzing, a modern application security testing technology. Through fuzzing a large scale of attack vectors can be tested automatically through pseudo-random mutations of the input parameters, uncovering vulnerabilities as well as reliability issues efficiently and timely.

As useful as fuzzing is in uncovering bugs in software, setting it up and using it properly is time-consuming and requires highly qualified IT security experts. The goal of Code Intelligence – consisting of Dr. Henning Perl, Philipp Langnickel, Sergej Dechand, Dr. Khaled
Yakdan and Prof. Dr. Matthew Smith – is twofold: on the one hand to make security testing experts work more efficiently, and on the other hand to make the security testing process more usable and automated so that even developers without security expertise can implement modern standards. “Through our software we want to give companies access to modern application security testing techniques and processes – with a strong focus on usability aspects for ‘non-experts’ as well as a tight integration into the customer’s continuous testing and delivery process” says founder and CTO Dr. Henning Perl.

Dr. Ulrich Schmitt, responsible for the investment at HTGF adds “Access to modern application security testing is of great value to many companies, for example to prevent data breaches and manipulation or even loss of control over devices. We are very happy that we were introduced to the Code Intelligence team through the Digital Hub Bonn and about this first joint investment. With the Hub’s know-how and network we can now jointly support the team’s next steps in the best way possible.”

The potential damage stemming from critical security vulnerabilities as well as reliability issues is especially high for programming languages with manual memory management such as C and C++. These languages are dominant in the growing markets IoT and Industry 4.0, both of which are target markets for Code Intelligence. Until end of 2018 Code Intelligence will continue to work on selected pilot projects. Market entry for the CI Security Suite is planned for mid of 2019.

    About Code Intelligence GmbH
Code Intelligence is a spin-off from the Usable Security & Privacy group of the University of Bonn. In 2017 the founding team was funded with 645,585 € through a EXIST-Forschungstransfer by the German Federal Ministry of Commerce. Before that, the team gathered expertise in malware and security analysis through their work at Fraunhofer FKIE.

  • New HTGF FinTech investment troy revolutionizes the debt collection process and combines machine learning with friendliness

The FinTech company troy is changing the traditional debt collection industry by introducing marketing and CRM methods into the collection process. The start-up with sites in Lippstadt (NRW) and Hamburg aimes to preserve the precious relationship between client and customer, while successfully recovering the receivables. troy’s founders, Philip Rürup and Till Völzke, optimize customer experiences during the collection phase and apply multichannel communications, data and AI-driven targeting and decades of debt collection expertise. The mission: troy becoming the most customer-friendly debt collection company in Europe.

The two founders and managing directors of troy, Philip Rürup and Till Völzke, founded their FinTech in 2017. First clients from the energy supply, publishing and multichannel trade sectors are already using troy’s new debt collection service. In May 2018 troy concluded a seven-figure financing round and convinced several investors, including High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), 3E Capital Group and several business angels from the FinTech world. With the launch in August 2018, the company will be open to the public.

About half of consumers are in default of payment due to forgetfulness or short-term bottlenecks. Despite that, traditional debt collection treats these customers as if they have not paid intentionally. The process is impersonal, bureaucratic and unpleasant. It is obvious that as a result, companies usually lose their customers. troy changes this and continues to treat the customer as a customer. Tried and tested methods of multichannel CRM, targeting approaches and machine learning drive the new approach. troy addresses each customer via the most promising mix of communication channels and with individually adjusted messages. High transparency, multiple payment methods and friendly communication add to the “troy way”. This allows for high recovery rates of both receivables and customer relationships.

“It is particularly pleasing that the individualized, friendly communication and flexible processes also have a positive effect on the recovery rate. This strengthens our mission to become the most customer-friendly debt collection company in Europe” adds Till Völzke.

    The Investors
Among the lead investors of troy are HTGF, the experienced series founder Hans-Jürgen Even with his Founder Catalyst 3E Capital Group as well as business angels from the FinTech world, including Tamaz Georgadze, Frank Freund and Michael Stephan (all Raisin / Weltsparen), Gamal Moukabary and Andreas Bermig (both Bonify).

    About troy
troy is a FinTech that specializes in customer-friendly, digital debt collection. • c-LEcta lays foundation for further growth and closes financing round

        • Closing of financing round with new investors Capricorn and bm|t brings growth capital and valuable access to international network
        • Growth financing to take c-LEcta to a new level by upscaling food ingredients manufacturing to commercial production in a multi-billion-euro market
        • New CFO Thomas Pfaadt to manage and support growth

    • c-LEcta, a world-leading biotechnology company focused on enzyme engineering and applications in regulated markets like food and pharma, has closed a financing round with Capricorn Venture Partners and the German investment company bm|t. The capital increase provides the company with growth capital as well as valuable access to an international network.

    • c-LEcta already has a diversified shareholder structure. In addition to the founder, Dr. Marc Struhalla, private industrial investors and German institutionals, the company has now expanded its circle of shareholders by attracting international investors. c-LEcta has received growth capital from two new shareholders. Lead investor, Capricorn Venture Partners, is an independent, internationally oriented investment company, based in Leuven, Belgium. Capricorn invests in innovative, technology driven companies and has a multidisciplinary team of experienced investment professionals. Capricorn invested through two funds, namely the Capricorn Sustainable Chemistry Fund NV and Quest for Growth NV. The German investment company bm|t invests in high-growth technology companies led by entrepreneurial teams. bm|t invested via the MFT Mittelstands-Fonds Thüringen GmbH & Co. KG. These new funds are planned to be particularly invested in the approval, launch and scale-up of products from the project pipeline, further development of the pipeline as well as the expansion of international sales.Mr. Ludwig Goris, Investment Manager of Capricorn, commented on the investment in c-LEcta: “We see that global mega trends and challenges in human nutrition are paving the way for industrial biotech companies like c-LEcta. Since its foundation, c-LEcta has built up a remarkable track record of technology and product development and has been able to validate that through a growing customer base of leading pharma, chemical and food ingredient companies. In addition, we were impressed by the highly qualified team in Leipzig. Founder and CEO Dr. Marc Struhalla and his motivated team have created a great company that has arrived at an attractive inflection point where the current product pipeline forms theMr. Marc Struhalla and his motivated team have created a great company that has arrived at an attractive inflection point where the current product pipeline forms the foundation for an accelerated growth curve. We are proud to lead this growth capital round and contribute to the success of c-LEcta.”Kevin Reeder, CEO of bm|t added, “bm|t, which has a substantial life sciences portfolio, is very optimistic about its investment in c-LEcta. The company´s strong team, track record of successful development, and a highly compelling product pipeline were extremely impressive. We feel c-LEcta is well-positioned to transition to a high-value biotechnology product company.” The two new investors expand the group of shareholders, which previously included the following investors: SHS Gesellschaft für Beteiligungsmanagement mbH, High-Tech Gründerfonds Management GmbH, KfW Bankengruppe, Dr. Marc Struhalla, Warning Beteiligungs GmbH, Dr. Bader Beteiligungs GmbH, and Arthur Steinmetz Beteiligungs GmbH.In order to reinforce management and the board and support the anticipated growth, Thomas Pfaadt (45) recently joined c-LEcta as CFO. He enriches the company with his experience in corporate finance and M&A. Previously Thomas Pfaadt worked for a private equity-owned operator of rehabilitation clinics as well as for a family-owned integrated healthcare group. He also gained experiences as an investment banker and consultant with a strong focus on the healthcare sector. He commented on what excites him about c-LEcta: “c-LEcta is a young, lean, and dynamic company and a global player at the same time. We are fighting the serious challenges of today’s human nutrition. A growing population and a growing demand for healthy natural food require solutions from enzyme technologies that the chemical industry cannot provide. We are pleased to have won these two new investors to finance our work in addressing these large opportunities.”

c-LEcta is a fully integrated biotechnology company based in Leipzig, Germany, with focus on enzyme engineering and application in regulated markets like food and pharma. c-LEcta currently employs around 60 people. The company is well diversified and covers a large part of the value chain from discovery to engineering to the commercial production of enzymes as well as the manufacturing of other high-quality biotechnology products, either as in-house developments or in close cooperation with the industry. Over the last five years, c-LEcta has conducted more than 30 enzyme engineering projects with a success rate of >90%. Only a few weeks ago, the company announced a major breakthrough as the first company to develop a process to enable the mass-production of a plant-based sweetener with a real sugar-like taste. In addition, two further food ingredient products with high market potential are in an advanced development stage and the project pipeline comprises several promising candidates addressing the multi-billion-euro food ingredients market. This growth financing is intended to raise c-LEcta to a new level and elevate the focused food ingredients from the project pipeline to commercial scale production.

CEO Dr. Marc Struhalla commented on c-LEcta’s core technology and the capital increase: “The performance requirements for enzymes to be applied in industrial processes are in most cases very specific and vary from naturally occurring variations. Enzymes therefore need to be adapted to industrial conditions via enzyme engineering, and c-LEcta owns one of the most efficient technology platforms in this area. For enzyme optimization as well as for the development of artificial enzyme activities, we use patent-protected strategies that are inspired by nature. The industrial application of these technologies holds great market potential. The financial strength and valuable international network that we have gained through this financing round now offers us the opportunity to develop the full potential of our technology and people. With Capricorn Venture Partners and bm|t, we get two active investors on board that can contribute substantially to our international growth ambitions. Also, I am all the more pleased that our new CFO Thomas Pfaadt will support us in this endeavor. Our goal is that in the future c-LEcta´s technology will be employed in many things we encounter in everyday life.”

  • Pet therapeutic antibody firm adivo announces closure of seed-financing round

German biotech company adivo specializing in generating species-specific therapeutic antibodies for companion animals announces that it received a seed financing from three investors. The adivo team aims to address high medical needs in dogs including cancer and chronic inflammation, with the potential of expanding activities into the development of therapeutics for other species in the future.

“Now, we are very pleased to have gained three strong and reliable partners that share our vision of promoting innovations in veterinary medicine. High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), Occident Group AG and MorphoSys AG together served as investors in adivo, thus laying the base to make adivo a success going forward. We will use the investment to push our therapeutic antibody programs forward as well as to continuously improve the adivo technology, while at the same time seeking collaborations with pharma partners to leverage our approach for numerous projects” said Dr. Ladetzki-Baehs, Managing Director of adivo GmbH.

“We are excited to be invested in a company which combines highly motivated people with a powerful technology. adivo will soon provide the right solutions to this market which is still defined by a significant number of high unmet medical needs.” stated Cédric Barra, Investment Manager Lifesciences at Occident Group.

adivo is passionate on developing new technologies to expand the range of therapeutic options for veterinarians and pet owners for their companions. A couple of years ago, when Dr. Ladetzki‑Baehs’ dog was diagnosed with cancer, she became aware of the lack of therapeutic options for her beloved pet. Knowing about innovations in human medicine, the idea was born to transfer the expertise in generating therapeutic antibodies for humans to the veterinary market.

“Current antibody concepts used for pet therapeutics face a number of limitations and might not be applicable to each and every existing compound. By developing adivo’s fully canine-based antibody library towards commercialization, we hope that we will be able to generate therapeutics for dogs that are both well tolerated and efficacious,” Dr. Waldhuber, Scientific Managing Director of adivo GmbH said.

In 2018, adivo was founded focussing on therapeutic antibodies for dogs for unmet medical needs such as cancer and chronic inflammatory conditions. In order to facilitate and complete the realization of the adivo founding project, MorphoSys in 2018 granted adivo the rights to the newly built fully synthetic phage display antibody library, mimicking the canine immune globulin repertoire.

“We are very pleased about this successful spin-out from MorphoSys. Today, antibodies are one of the most successful drug classes in human medicine. adivo’s dog antibody library is a great and innovative approach addressing the exciting area of animal health with products generated based on the concept of MorphoSys’s human antibody technology“, commented Dr. Markus Enzelberger, Chief Scientific Officer of MorphoSys. “We wish our former colleagues the best of luck and are looking forward to seeing adivo generate new therapeutic candidates for animals.”

The company is located in the Innovation and Start-Up Center for Biotechnology (IZB) in Martinsried near Munich, offering a perfect place to implement new ideas and connect with other founders and biotech companies.

  • The High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) invests together with MIG Fonds and Business Angels about 2.5 million Euro in the medical technology start-up GWA Hygiene from Stralsund

The GWA Hygiene is fighting hospital germs and thus reducing the risk of their spread. The company from Stralsund combines innovative medical technology with modern information technology. The NosoEx system developed by the startup has already successfully passed the practical test at 70 wards in 10 hospitals.

Germ transmission due to improper hand disinfection
GWA Hygiene offers hospitals and nursing homes a simple and technologically mature solution to significantly reduce the risk of spreading hospital germs. Between five and ten percent of all patients suffer from an infection gotten at the hospital. These infections cause 147,000 preventable deaths per year in Europe, 16 million additional hospital days and costs of around seven billion euros per year. 90 percent of the germs are transmitted through the hands. One reason for the transmission of germs is that hospital and nursing staff do not always practice hand disinfection according to the recommendations of the experts.

Monitoring of hygiene standards with the aid of sensor technology
This is where GWA technology comes in. GWA sensors on the disinfectant dispenser communicate with portable sensors of hospital personnel. The data is transmitted to a hub and can be evaluated in compliance with data protection regulations. This simplified monitoring of hand disinfection shows the connection postulated by many studies between the use of disinfectants, hand hygiene and the number of cases of contamination. Jürgen Kosch, General Partner of MIG AG explains: “The market potential of the GWA solution is significant. In Germany alone there are 664,000 hospital beds and over 900,000 care places to prevent the transmission of germs”.

Several million hand disinfections already detected in practical tests
The so-called NosoEx system developed by GWA has already passed the practical test and is used in around 70 wards in 10 hospitals. Several million hand disinfections have already been recorded. GWA is in talks with 50 other hospitals and hospital operators. A Europe-wide roll-out is also in preparation. With the capital now raised, the aim is to establish a sales organisation and to become the leading digitally-supported provider for hygiene monitoring in hospitals and nursing homes.

Dr. Anke Caßing, Investment Manager of the HTGF, says: “We are very pleased that this financing round will further advance the establishment of the NosoEx system so that hospitals will receive the tools to improve hygiene that meet their requirements. Only products that integrate easily into existing systems and processes can improve hygiene. NosoEx fulfils this requirement in an exemplary manner and has the potential to be successful in other markets as well.“

Founder and Managing Director Maik Gronau sees the successful conclusion of the financing round as confirmation of his business model: “With the new investors, we have now formed an ideal consortium that will join us in the forthcoming growth phase.“

    About GWA Hygiene GmbH
GWA Hygiene is committed to reducing the number of hospital infections. For this purpose, the company has developed NosoEx, a modern monitoring system for measuring hand hygiene. The IoT system can be seamlessly integrated into the infrastructure of the health facilities. For this purpose, the existing disinfectant dispensers are equipped with sensors. The software can then be used to see how the disinfection figures for each station, donor and occupational group are developing. Measures to improve the hygiene situation can then be initiated.
The Stralsund start-up was founded in 2015 and now has 21 employees. In addition to Maik Gronau and Tobias Gebhardt, Dirk Amtsberg, Marcel Walz and Daniel Neuendorf are among the founding partners.
The NosoEx system is currently being used by a double-digit number of customers in the DACH region.

  • Orbex Secures £30 Million Funding for UK Space Launch Vehicles

Orbex Secures £30 Million Funding for UK Space Launch Vehicles

    • Reusable Rockets to Launch Small Satellites into Orbit from UK Spaceport Using Renewable Fuel
    • Orbex has announced that it has secured £30 million ($39.6 million) in public and private funding for the development of orbital space launch systems.

Recently emerging from stealth mode, Orbex is a UK-based spaceflight company, with subsidiaries and production facilities in Denmark and Germany. The company has received funding from two of Europe’s largest venture capital funds, Sunstone Capital and the High-Tech Gründerfonds, as well as strategic investor Elecnor Deimos Space, private investors, the UK Space Agency (UKSA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission Horizon 2020 programme. Orbex will launch orbital vehicles from the newly-announced UK Vertical Launch spaceport in Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands as part of the main consortium.

Orbex is constructing a completely re-thought and re-designed orbital launch vehicle, called Prime, to deliver small satellites into Earth’s orbit. The Prime launcher has a novel architecture that eliminates the fundamental mass challenge of small launchers. Prime launchers are up to 30% lighter and 20% more efficient than any other vehicle in the small launcher category, packing more power per cubic litre than many heavy launchers.  The Prime vehicle will launch satellites to altitudes up to 1,250km, inserting them into sun-synchronous or polar orbits.

“It is our ethos to invest in exceptional teams with bold visions,” said Jimmy Fussing Neilsen, Managing Partner of Sunstone Technology Ventures.  “Behind the scenes, Orbex has made huge strides forward over the past three years, reaching a level of technical and commercial sophistication that is surprising for a young company.  This explains why Orbex has been able to attract such high-profile public and private backers, as well as experienced personnel. Orbex is already well on its way to becoming the leading private space launch company in Europe.”

Minimising the environmental impact of launches was a key consideration in the rocket’s design.  Prime is a low-mass and low-carbon launcher, using a single renewable fuel, bio-propane, that cuts carbon emissions by 90% compared to old-fashioned hydrocarbon fuels.  The rocket uses a novel zero-shock staging system called Magic, which leaves zero orbital debris.  It also has built-in reusability, with an innovative new low mass recovery and reflight system.

“It was clear to us from the start that Orbex had the potential to disrupt and fundamentally improve the satellite launch market in Europe and beyond,” said Yann Fiebig, Senior Investment  Manager at the High-Tech Gründerfonds.  “The company has made rapid progress, taking their innovations from concept to reality in short order.  Their very strong management team deserves full credit for its ability to execute and we look forward to being part of their positive disruption over the coming months and years.”

Orbex has already secured commercial engagements with major aerospace organisations.  The European Space Agency has contracted Orbex to study the development of a European micro launcher solution. Also, leading European engineering and aerospace company, Elecnor Deimos, has purchased a strategic equity position in the company as part of this funding round.

“Despite this being the first time that most people have heard of Orbex, they have quietly and diligently reached the point where they are arguably already the leading European space launch company,” commented Miguel Belló Mora, CEO, Elecnor Deimos.  “By re-thinking and re-framing the problems associated with satellite launches, Orbex has developed something unique and disruptive with its Prime launcher.  This is why we are involved both as an investor and a strategic partner.  We will be explaining more about what this partnership means for both companies in the near future.”

Jean-Jacques Dordain, the former Director General of the European Space Agency has joined Orbex as Chairman of the Advisory Board.  He is joined by other notable figures from the space industry, including Jan Skolmli, Orbex’s recently-appointed Chief Commercial Officer, who was formerly Head of Launch at SSTL, the world’s leading small satellite manufacturer.  Orbex staff members have professional backgrounds with NASA, ESA and several other commercial spaceflight organisations. Equipment developed by Orbex team members has flown on more than 50 deep space missions, and collectively they have developed more than 50 rocket engines and a wide range of orbital and suborbital launch vehicles.

“Orbex is one of the very few private spaceflight companies whose staff have credible, practical experience in the development of micro-launch vehicles and rocket engines,” commented Chris Larmour, Orbex CEO.  “With our collective experience, we have developed a low mass, low carbon, high performance 21st century orbital launch vehicle, designed specifically to support the needs of the rapidly growing smallsat industry. There is a significant launch backlog for small satellites globally and Orbex is primed to give industry and science a cost-effective, reliable and responsive route into space, directly from Europe.”

Further technical and commercial announcements will follow during the Farnborough Airshow 2018.

  • Ferroelectric Memory Company receives growth financing from eCAPITAL and HTGF

Ferroelectric Memory Company receives growth financing from eCAPITAL and HTGF

Significant boost to growing the team of a company with a high-performance, ultra-low-power non-volatile memory technology

Ferroelectric Memory Company (FMC), an enterprise that commercializes technology for disruptive non-volatile memory solutions for microcontrollers, announced today the successful closing of a € 4.6 million growth financing led by eCAPITAL entrepreneurial Partners AG under participation of High-Tech Gründerfonds. The funds will enable the company with base in Dresden to expand its team, accelerate the further development of their solutions and conquer a significant market share by replacing the current standard technology.

Driven by the global trend towards digitization, automation and networking, billions of devices are being equipped with an increasing number of microcontrollers. These tiny one-chip computer systems are at the heart of innovation in fast-growing key technologies such as the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. Industries such as consumer electronics, healthcare, security, automotive and aviation are experiencing disruptive changes.

The challenge of the digital future for microcontrollers is not only to store increasing amounts of ever-more complex data in ever-smaller memories. They must retain data for many years and fulfil more demanding requirements such as a higher number of write cycles and retention even when exposed to extreme temperatures. The current industry standard for non-volatile memory, the eFlash technology, can cope with the new requirements only at the expense of extremely complex manufacturing processes and therefore inhibits further progress in the miniaturization of microcontrollers. In comparison to the latest generations of standard CMOS technology, eFlash lags by five technology generations.

FMC’s memory technology is directly derived from standard CMOS technology and therefore solves the problem of miniaturization.

The market for FMC is huge and fast-paced. The main actors are integrated manufacturers or foundries as well as fabless semiconductor companies. FMC offers these enterprises its patent-protected Ferroelectric Field Effect Transistor (FeFET) technology. FeFETs use the ferroelectric properties of hafnium oxide to transform existing standard CMOS transistors into efficient memory cells. CMOS transistors still enable scaling according to Moore’s Law, and thus derived FeFETs offer superior performance, high density, ultra-low power consumption and extreme temperature stability. The key for becoming the new standard in this industry is that they enable further miniaturization of microcontrollers. FeFETs can be manufactured on existing production lines without main changes or capital expenditures as hafnium oxide is already a standard isolating material in this industry. In comparison to eFlash, the manufacturing process is much simpler, so that the production costs can be drastically reduced.

“Our non-volatile memory technology addresses the industry’s current and future needs with 1,000 times higher speed and 1,000 times lower power consumption, while significantly reducing manufacturing costs. With the support of eCAPITAL, we can hire the right talent, such as Analog / Mixed-Signal Designers and Characterization Engineers, to accelerate our product development and drive market penetration,” said Dr. Stefan Müller, CEO of FMC.

“The disruptive potential of the technology and the customer wins the company has already achieved to date are truly impressive. FMC has the potential to become the new industry standard and we look forward to backing the company throughout this endeavor” adds Willi Mannheims, managing partner at eCAPITAL.

“With FMC we have identified once again a technology jewel in Dresden that can disrupt entire industries and become a real gamechanger. We welcome FMC in eCAPITAL’s portfolio and look forward to contribute our experience and network to ensure the rapid and successful development of FMC,” comments Dr. Paul-Josef Patt, Managing Partner and CEO of eCAPITAL. Patt was already Lead Investor in the Dresden-based company Novaled, which was sold very successfully by eCAPITAL to Samsung end of 2013. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Dresden-based company Heliatek, an OPV provider. FMC already marks the 11th investment by eCAPITAL’s current fund eCAPITAL IV, which was launched in 2016.

“The ability to convert traditional transistors into non-volatile memory devices has a rare potential for disruption. With seed funding from the HTGF, the company has now reached the next level. We have therefore increased our exposure to FMC to a total of EUR 1.6 million and are pleased to have gained a valuable partner for further growth with eCAPITAL,” adds Yann Fiebig, Senior Investment Manager at HTGF.

    About FMC
FMC is the provider of extremely efficient FeFET memory solutions for non-volatile storage. FeFET memories are ultra-low-power, high-performance, very dense, and extremely temperature stable. This disruptive technology will solve the scaling problem of semiconductor foundries and fabless companies. It can scale to transistor sizes ranging from 28nm and below. Technology development was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free State of Saxony. The FMC team has been supported by “EXIST Forschungstransfer”, a program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The company was founded in 2016 and is based in Dresden, Germany.
